In conversation with founder Laura from L-Complex

Regular consumption of kombucha can help you compensate for various nutrient deficiencies and keep your intestinal environment in balance thanks to the many probiotic kombucha cultures and beneficial acids.

If you do have an explicit deficiency of a certain nutrient, it is recommended that you take a dietary supplement to specifically replenish your stores.

In the jungle of numerous nutritional supplements, Laura's young startup , L-COMPLEX , stands out from the crowd. Her products are made exclusively from natural ingredients , tested for 100% purity , and largely vegan. In this interview, Laura shares interesting facts about nutrients and why low stress, a healthy gut , and a balanced microbiome are so important for a healthy body !

"Food is no longer as nutrient-dense as it once was. Furthermore, our digitalized, fast-paced society is living under completely abnormal stress levels, which prevent our bodies from properly absorbing and storing nutrients."

1. Please briefly introduce yourself and L-COMPLEX. Why the name, and how did you come up with the idea of founding L-COMPLEX?

My name is Laura, and I founded L-COMPLEX at the beginning of 2019, parallel to my previous job at a Berlin startup. I've always been interested in healthy nutrition. It took a long time for me to discover nutritional supplements after a long health-related stumbling block. My realization: We live in a world full of new stress factors that make healthy eating, sufficient exercise, and adequate relaxation difficult. Chronic conditions like migraines, intolerances, or fatigue are now part of everyday life for most people. But we can actively do something about it! I want to help people better understand their bodies and, through a holistic approach, help them achieve more joy and health in life . The right nutritional supplements are the most important first step.

2. Dietary supplements are trending: What sets your products apart from others?

The dietary supplement market is very opaque and now flooded with products and a wide variety of healing claims. Most products contain many synthetic and animal-derived ingredients and additives that the body does not need and which can even be harmful. The products are hardly ever tested for purity, so they can sometimes be contaminated with pesticides, heavy metals and other toxins. Our products are all based on natural ingredients , are 100% tested for purity and are largely vegan . We produce in Germany according to the highest EU guidelines , for short delivery routes and full control over the supply chain and quality. Instead of plastic, we use recycled glass for packaging. We try to work and produce in a way that is as CO2-neutral as possible. Our recipes are specially created together with our biochemists. We only use ingredients that are scientifically proven to have a function/benefit in the body without putting a strain on it. Our experts can also react quickly to new research findings .

3. Why do so many people in a developed society like ours need additional supplements?

Shouldn't a conscious diet be enough to provide the body with the nutrients it needs? You would think so. Unfortunately, it is our developed society that is the problem: our nutrient soils are completely overtaxed by agriculture, and the earth can no longer recover properly. The result: food is no longer as nutrient-rich as it used to be. On top of that, our digitalized, fast-paced society lives under completely abnormal stress levels , which prevent our bodies from absorbing and storing nutrients properly. Imagine it like this: we used to run away from lions, and to do this, all our other organs, including our digestion, were shut down so we could survive. Today, our heart rate is racing due to the various media we consume every day, as well as the daily stress of work, family, and leisure time. At the same time, we sleep even less, and targeted relaxation phases are neglected. The result is the same. Hardly anyone today gets the nutrients they need to stay healthy in the long term. This is clearly reflected, among other things, in the increase in chronic physical and mental illnesses . And let's be honest? Who feels at 100% these days? Hardly anyone! Optimized nutrient intake helps.

4. On your blog, you write that "emotional stress and anxiety are more prevalent than ever before and, in the long run, have a significant impact on health." How can your supplements help?

Our psyche and physical well-being are closely linked and behave symbiotically, so to speak. A weak psyche influences nutrient absorption and the immune system , just as nutrition and the immune system also influence the psyche. Anyone who suffers from stress and anxiety should pay attention to nutrients that support the immune system and a normal psyche. Since our nutrient absorption mainly takes place in the intestines and 70% of our immune system is located in the intestines , we always recommend building up our intestines by taking our Active Cultures as a first step. Vitamin B Complex is also recommended. The B vitamins are involved in almost every metabolism in the body and not only promote the immune system (B6, B12), but also have a direct influence on the psyche (B1) and nervous system (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B12).

5. Do you have any tips on how to best support your immune system during the cold season?

Anyone who doesn't already do so should definitely make sure they take a vitamin D supplement in winter . Vitamin D is only absorbed through sunlight and cannot be produced by the body itself. It is therefore not surprising that up to 90% of Germans are deficient. Good to know: Vitamin D is actually a hormone and therefore has an indirect influence on other hormones such as serotonin or our reproductive hormones. Women in particular should therefore ensure that their levels are good. Additional antioxidants such as vitamin C and zinc support our immune system against pathogens that are particularly prevalent in winter. Otherwise, we recommend making sure you eat enough green vegetables , as they contain many valuable nutrients and are often lacking in winter.

6. In your opinion, how important is the microbiome and a healthy gut for nutrient absorption?

As mentioned previously, the microbiome is incredibly important. Nutrient absorption occurs primarily in the small intestine and can only function properly if our gut is in balance. Therefore, it's worth investing in a healthy intestinal environment, for example, through proper nutrition and supplemental nutrients that keep our intestinal flora in balance .

7. As kombucha lovers, we naturally find L-Complex's Active Cultures particularly exciting. Please tell us more about how valuable you think probiotic bacterial cultures are in your diet.

A balanced intestinal flora is essential for our general well-being. That's why it's worth taking active steps to improve our intestinal health. Our Active Cultures contain 14 of the most important bacterial strains and 10.65 billion germs, which are essential for a good intestinal environment. When we feel bloated, have digestive problems , or even suffer from intolerances, this is usually a sign that we don't have enough good intestinal bacteria. Our intestinal wall may already be permeable and susceptible to pathogens (“leaky gut”). This is where probiotics like our Active Cultures can help and replenish the good bacteria in the intestines . It's also generally worth incorporating probiotic foods into your diet to provide our intestines with additional, daily support with good bacteria. We particularly recommend: kimchi, yogurt, kombucha, miso, tofu, and sauerkraut.

8. Please give us a little glimpse into the future. What else do you have planned for your journey with L-COMPLEX?

With L-COMPLEX, I want to create a place where I empower customers to take control of their own health . With the right tips and products, I want to help people develop routines that lay the foundation for a long and worthwhile life – despite stress. I'm aiming for a holistic approach that goes far beyond micronutrients. So, you can expect many exciting projects in the coming year.
