How is Mate tea traditionally prepared and drunk?
Mate tea is made from the brew of dried leaves of the Mate bush (Ilex paraguariensis). Strictly speaking, it is not a real tea at all, because it does not come from the genus of the tea plant Camellia Sinensis. The Mate plant is mainly grown in southern Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay and it is hard to imagine everyday life there without it. The crushed leaves of the Mate bush (also called yerba) are infused with cold or hot water and drunk from a calabash (also called matí). Traditionally, a special drinking tube with a small sieve is used to drink from the small bulbous vessel. So the Mate leaves are not drunk and the tea can even be infused several times. In Brazil, however, the Mate leaves are finely ground and called Erva Mate .
And this is how you can prepare warm Mate tea yourself:
- First fill the calabash halfway with Mate leaves.
- Cover the opening of the calabash with the palm of your hand, then turn it upside down. Then gently shake everything back and forth. This allows the coarser leaves to separate from the fine leaves.
- Then press the Mate leaves onto the inner edge of the calabash with a little warm water.
- After you have put the drinking straw into the calabash and the leaves have swollen, you slowly pour the rest of the container with warm water (approx. 70 C)..
- Now you let everything steep for 2-3 minutes and the tea can be drunk.
